The nominations for the 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards were announced early Tuesday morning in Los Angeles. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association – known for favouring A-list stars often in spite of their film’s critical reception – rewarded an eclectic bunch, from awards’ season darlings The King’s Speech (7 noms) and The Social Network (6 noms) to box office blunders Burlesque and The Tourist.

The films competing against The King’s Speech and The Social Network in the Best Picture – Drama category include Black Swan, The Fighter and Inception. The Coen brothers’ True Grit is strangely absent from the ballet, but it should be noted that the Oscars recognise ten Best Picture nominees, and it will likely see some attention there.
Over in the far more dubious category of Best Picture – Comedy or Musical, Burlesque and The Tourist will duke it out with genuine Oscar contender The Kids Are All Right and forgettable fluff Alice in Wonderland and RED. Apparently, the HFPA didn’t see (deep breath) Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Four Lions, City Island, The Other Guys, Get Him To The Greek, Easy A and countless other films that were actually comedies.
But it’s not all bad news. The Australian contingent is strong in this year’s Golden Globe line-up, with Geoffrey Rush (The King’s Speech), Nicole Kidman (Rabbit Hole) and Jacki Weaver (Animal Kingdom) scoring nominations in the film category. Toni Collette also received a nod for her work on the television show United States of Tara. (We should also note that Aussie songstress Sia also scored a nod for co-writing the Best Original Song nominee Bound to You with Christina Aguilera.)

Discuss: Seriously, what is up with that Comedy or Musical category?! I know the HFPA is famous for nominating big-name actors just so they’ll attend the ceremony, but did they really have to be so transparent as to nominate Depp twice?
